Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation is seeking to hire immediately a Development Officer. The Development Officer is responsible for the planning and execution of fund-raising and development activities for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation (a C-3 organization) and the Council for a Livable World (a C-4 organization with an associated political action committee).
General Internships (2 positions)
The Center for Arms Control & Non-Proliferation offers full-time internship opportunities for students of political science, international relations, peace studies, or related fields. Founded in 1980, the Center was established to educate policy makers, the media, and the public about weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms sales, military spending and arms control alternatives. The Center supports projects researching various aspects of U.S. national security, including: military spending, missile defense, non-proliferation, and chemical and biological weapons control.
Biological and Chemical Weapons Program Internship (1 position)
The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation is seeking a full-time intern to work in its Biological and Chemical Weapons Control Program from September to December 2006. The Center is a not for profit organization that conducts research and policy advocacy on various aspects of U.S. national security, including: military spending, missile defense, non-proliferation, and chemical and biological weapons control.
Development Officer
Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation is seeking to hire immediately a Development Officer:
The Development Officer is responsible for the planning and execution of fund-raising and development activities for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation (a C-3 organization) and the Council for a Livable World (a C-4 organization with an associated political action committee).
Pursues general operating and endowment funding. Responsible for solicitation and administration of planned giving. Researches and cultivates new sources of funding. Coordinates individual giving campaign, including direct mail, personal solicitation, phone solicitation, online outreach, and special events. Coordinates the design, production and distribution of development materials such as brochures, letters, invitations etc. Maintains regular contact with major individual donors, and coordinates meetings between major donors and senior staff and board members. Coordinates fund-raising efforts of board members and other staff. Works closely with Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director. Reports directly to Chief Operating Officer.
Qualifications:
- Several years experience in development field
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills
- Ability to manage multifaceted workload under broad supervision
- Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
- Comfort working with PCs and office software applications
- Familiarity with and dedication to arms control issues a plus
Salary is dependent on qualifications and includes a generous benefits package. Position is in Washington, DC.

Office environment: Located on Capitol hill, our office environment is intimate and fast-paced. Project analysts work regularly with interns and encourage contact with other organizations in Washington DC. The atmosphere is casual, dress is professional.
Intern responsibilities: The Center staff seeks to assign interns projects to suit their interests. The internships are a mixture of substantive responsibilities and light administrative tasks and may include activities such as:
- Attending Congressional hearings;
- Attending meetings with members of the arms control community;
- Analyzing pending legislation or timely international issues;
- Assisting with administrative tasks which may include updating databases or assembling large mailings;
- Helping to maintain the Center's website
Requirements/ Qualifications: Prospective candidates should be college juniors or seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students, who share an interest in the Center's goals and objectives. Strong academic background, good writing and research skills, and computer and internet familiarity are a must.
Compensation: Usually $500 a month, based on a 40 hour work
week.
Academic credit: Yes, if qualified.
Hours: Full or part time, 3-4 months
in duration. In general, the Fall Internship is September-December, the
Spring Internship is January-May, and the Summer Internship is June-August.
Deadline: the next Internship deadline is August 1, 2007.

- Attending meetings with members of the arms control community;
- Helping to maintain the Center's website
Requirements/ Qualifications: Prospective candidates should be college juniors or seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students, who share an interest in the Center's goals and objectives. Strong academic background, good writing and research skills, and computer and internet familiarity are a must. A background in the life sciences is a plus.
Compensation: $500 a month, based on a 40 hour work week.
Academic credit: Yes, if qualified.
Hours: Full time, 3-4 months in duration. Internship is September-December. Position may include travel.
